There’s nothing quite like the majestic feeling of the wind in your hair as you ride through the fields on a hot summer day. Summer is the best time to get your horse – and yourself – into peak condition. But in the dead of summer, temperatures can quickly become a problem. Long, hot days and high humidity can increase your risk of dehydration, heat stress and other heat-related health issues for horse and rider.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can beat the heat so that you can enjoy your summer rides.
- Stay hydrated. It is easy to forget to eat and drink while you are on long rides, but dehydration is no laughing matter. Dehydration can cause fatigue, lack of coordination, diminished concentration, physical weakness, headaches, cramps and irritability. Make sure you keep adequate supplies of water with you while riding. Your horse will appreciate the thought, as well!
- Take frequent rest breaks. This will give you opportunities to stretch out and can help keep your horse from becoming overexerted.
- Seek shade whenever possible. You may also consider avoiding riding during the peak sunlight hours of the day.
- Wear proper riding apparel. Many riding helmets are made with built-in ventilation and moisture-wicking features. Breathable, lightweight fabrics are the name of the game.
